Drywall & Wood Screws

Black, nickel and zinc drywall screws, plus chipboard screws

Not every job is metal on metal. Interior walls, ceilings, furniture and joinery all need a screw made for board and timber rather than steel.

We stock drywall screws in three finishes — black for dry rooms, nickel for humid rooms and visible work, and zinc for bathrooms and anywhere damp. All three come in the same sizes, so you can use the right one in each part of a job.

Chipboard screws complete the range. Their twin thread and plain shank pull two pieces of board or timber tightly together, which is exactly what furniture and joinery work needs.

Drywall & Wood Screws — common questions

Which drywall screw finish should I choose?

Black for normal dry rooms. Nickel where it gets humid or the screws will be seen. Zinc for bathrooms, kitchens and coastal buildings. All three are the same screw underneath — only the coating changes.

What is the difference between a drywall screw and a chipboard screw?

A drywall screw has a bugle head and only fixes board to a frame. A chipboard screw has a countersunk head and a twin thread, and pulls two pieces of timber or board tightly together. Drywall screws are brittle and should never be used for anything structural.

Do I need to drill a pilot hole?

Not for drywall screws, and not for chipboard screws in the middle of a panel. Near a board edge or in hardwood, drill a pilot about 70 percent of the thread size or the wood will split.

Can these be used outdoors?

Not the black or nickel ones. Zinc handles semi-exposed areas. For fully exposed outdoor work, ask us about hot-dip galvanised or stainless.
