Self Drilling Hex Head Screws — Zinc Plated
SDS hex screws / roofing screws — the standard screw for roofing and cladding
This is the screw most roofing and cladding jobs use. It drills its own hole, cuts its own thread and seals the joint in one go, so there is no need to drill first.

What it is used for
Use this screw to fix metal sheet onto a steel frame where the joint has to keep water out.
Fixing roof sheets
Holds profiled metal roofing sheet down onto steel purlins.
Fixing wall sheets
Holds cladding sheet onto girts and side rails.
Keeping water out
The rubber washer seals every hole, so the roof does not leak.
Saving time on site
No pilot hole needed. One screw, one action, job done.
Overview
The zinc plating protects against rust in normal, inland conditions. A rubber EPDM washer under the head seals the hole against rain.
We stock a wide range of sizes at our Bengaluru warehouse and check every batch before it leaves. Sizes we do not hold can be brought in on order.
Drills and fixes in one action
No pilot hole. On a large roof this saves hours of labour.
Sealed against rain
A bonded EPDM washer compresses against the sheet and seals the hole.
Hard tip, tough body
The tip is hardened so it drills; the body stays tough so the screw does not snap.
Normally in stock
Common sizes are held at our Bengaluru warehouse and usually go out the same working day.

Exact specifications vary between manufacturers and production batches. Tell us the job and we will confirm the specification before despatch, and send the manufacturer’s datasheet or test certificate for the batch if you need it for a submittal.
Section 1 — Installation
How to fit it
The screw does three jobs in one action: it drills the hole, forms the thread and seals the joint. Getting it right is mostly about speed and knowing when to stop.

- 1
Match the drill point to the steel
Measure the purlin first. A #2 point handles up to 2 mm, #3 up to 3 mm, #4 and #5 up to 6 mm. Too small a point will burn out before it gets through.
- 2
Fix through the top of the rib
On profiled roofing, always fix through the raised crown, never the valley. Water sits in the valley.
- 3
Hold the driver straight
Keep the driver square to the sheet. A screw driven at an angle will not seal, whatever washer it has.
- 4
Stop when the washer just spreads
Stop the moment the rubber starts to bulge past the metal cap. Driving further dents the sheet and creates a puddle around the screw.
- 5
Check the back
At least three full threads should come out the other side of the purlin. Less than that and the fixing is not holding properly.
Section 2 — Applications
Where it is used
Anywhere thin metal sheet meets a steel frame, in normal inland conditions.

Metal roofing
Profiled GI, colour-coated and galvalume sheet fixed down to Z and C purlins on factory and warehouse roofs.

Steel framing and purlins
Secondary steel, purlins and girts on pre-engineered buildings and industrial sheds.

Ducting and HVAC
Joining galvanised duct sections and supports in air-conditioning and ventilation work.

Panel and sheet fixing
Sandwich panels, cladding runs and sheet-to-frame connections across godowns and canopies.

Signage and boards
Hoardings, fascia panels and signage frames fixed back to steel or sheet.

Electrical enclosures
Panel boxes, cabinets and enclosure assembly in metal fabrication workshops.
SDS Hex Zinc Plated — questions we get asked
What size self drilling screw do I need for a 2 mm purlin?
A 12 x 45 mm hex head with a #3 drill point suits 0.5 mm sheet on a 2 mm purlin. Send us your sheet and purlin thickness and we will confirm the exact size.
How long will these last on a roof?
On an inland, sheltered roof, 8 to 12 years before the zinc starts to break down. Near the coast or around chemicals, far less — use Xylan coated screws there instead.
Can I use them on aluminium sheet?
Not directly. Zinc plated steel against aluminium causes corrosion at the joint. Use stainless or bi-metal screws for aluminium.
Do you give bulk rates for contractors?
Yes. Send us your quantities and we will price the whole order rather than per piece. We also arrange scheduled deliveries so you are not storing stock on site.
